Purchased through our close import partner Royal Coffee in Oakland, CA, Sumatra Bener Meriah Mandiri is a great example of a classic Indonesian wet-hulled coffee.
In wet-hulling, which is the standard coffee processing method in Indonesia, coffee is stripped of all its protective coating after fermentation and then dried, as opposed to traditional washed coffees which are dried with their innermost protective skin (called parchment), intact. This unique process results in coffees with flavor profiles as challenging as they are compelling; flavors can range from earthy characteristics of peat and tobacco all the way to more savory notes of cedar or herbs.
This particular Sumatra impressed us because in the midst of all that characteristic earthiness there lurks a wonderful dark fruitiness reminiscent of figs and black currant.
Roasted a little darker than our other single origin coffees, Sumatra Bener Meriah Mandiri is a coffee for those who desire a rich, intense cup. Wonderful in both filter and French press.
Here’s what Royal has to say about this coffee: “Sumatra Organic Bener Meriah Mandiri is sourced from family-owned farms organized around the KSU Gayo Mandiri cooperative located in the Bener Meriah regency within the Aceh district, on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. KSU Gayo Mandiri was founded in 2008 and currently has 1218 members. On average, producers cultivate coffee on 2.5 acres of land using their own micro-mills to depulp and dry coffee. The cooperative hosts regular trainings on best agricultural practices to assist small producers with their organic certification while improving the quality of their coffee. KSU Gayo Mandiri also invest premiums generated from certifications in roads to help producers overcome problems transporting their coffee. The cooperative also recently purchased an ambulance to improve access to emergency healthcare.”
